I am getting to know the city of Atlanta and this is my story. I moved here on August 22, 2010 to start a new job. I was born and raised in Michigan but I grew up in Brasil, Cincinnati and New York City. My heart is in NYC and my friends are in Cincinnati. My body is relegated to HotLanta.
I am a 30 year old single, professional female and I enjoy one dating adventure after another, restaurants, good wine, sports and hanging out with friends, among other things. I believe in amazing public transportation (expect a rant on MARTA at some point), giving back to your community and diversity. This basically means I don't have a car, I volunteer and I date black men (I'm an equal opportunity dater).
So far, in my week of residence here, nothing terribly exciting has happened. I have been getting used to being called "bitch" instead of, well...I don't know what perfect strangers are supposed to call me. I am in temp housing near Ralph McGill Blvd, just north of RMB, where there is a soup kitchen and homeless shelter. Most of the homeless in the area just ignore me and some of the factory workers nearby call me sugar, sweetie, darlin', and other such acceptable monikers. But I find I just respond to "hey bitch" just the same. I don't know why, it just doesn't really register until afterwards.
I ate at Bab's on Juniper Street today, for brunch. One reason that I will hopefully love ATL is because you can have anything with sweet potatoes and I just LOVE sweet potatoes. I had sweet potato waffles today with a cherry topping, eggs with cheese, 2 strips of slightly overcooked bacon and potatoes with parmesan cheese. The parm was not of the fresh variety, but the potatoes were still nice and crispy on the outside, which I like.
The brunch was pretty good, especially with the pomegranate, blueberry lemonade. I would go back just for the lemonade. While reading some work papers, I had the opportunity to eavesdrop and this is what I heard:
RHofATL (real housewife of ATL) 1: Jenny got a face-lift.
RHofATL 2: A face-lift, really? I thought she didn't have any money.
That's about all I can remember, verbatim, of the conversation. They also discussed someone named Thomas Keller who would be at some big party/fund-raiser thing. It sounded like #1 didn't want #2 to go to the fundraiser, presumably because she was going and it was exclusive (what I gathered from the snippets). She mentioned how expensive it was to buy a ticket to go.
It was a nice little jaunt outside of this crazy little Bermuda triangle that I feel like I am in right now. This week I will be going on a date, on Tuesday and that is about all that I anticipate. Seeing as how next weekend is a holiday, I will definitely have to find something to do.
Maybe I'll have a good story for you all soon...
